WE ARE VERY EXCITED TO BE ABLE TO WATCH OUR BLUETIT NESTING IN OUR BIRD BOX IN THE GARDEN AGAIN THIS YEAR. WE ARE FOLLOWING EVERY MOVE IT MAKES ON A LIVE LINK IN THE FOYER. IT IS SO EXCITING!

Spring Clean In The Garden
WRIGLEY'S LITTERLESS CAMPAIGN
We have received £329 from the ‘Wrigley’s Litterless Campaign’. This is recognition for the efforts we have made in combating litter in our school grounds and local community. The school Eco-Committee has led a school campaign which included organising daily litter patrols and class litter picks in the local community. The children have worked very hard to tidy up Moykerran ‘Plantin’ (a local park). This was done in collaboration with St. Colm’s High School and Gaelsoil na Speiríní. They have also planned litter picks in Draperstown.

St. Mary's is Awarded Green Flag Status for the Third Time!
On Monday 9th May the Eco Schools judges visited our school to determine if we could keep our Green Flag status. The Eco Committee and Mr Brunton took them on a tour of the school. The Committee talked about all the eco activities that had been taking place throughout the school year. They also showed the judges our beautiful school building and grounds. The judges were very impressed with how all available space was utilized in the school. They also commented on our innovative work regarding bird watching. The judges said that we are lucky to have such a hard working, proactive and enthusiastic Eco Committee.

Our Live Link To The Nest In The Garden
There was great excitement in the garden this year again as we had another live video link to a nest in the school garden. We were able to watch the nest being built. The eggs being laid. The roosting, hatching and the growth of the young birds. We had a sad end to our Spring Watch last year when the mother bird died and the eggs didn't hatch. However this year, we were able to watch the whole cycle on the LCD screen in the front porch. Children were coming to school extra early to see what had happened overnight. We were even able to see how the mother fed her young and kept the nest clean. What a great project!

Wrigley's Litter Less Campaign
The Eco Committee successfully applied for a grant of £320 from the Wrigley's Litter Less Campaign. Well done to everyone on keeping our school grounds litter free and a special thanks to Year 7 for working hard at cleaning up Moykerran Plantin. The Eco Committee will use the money to spend on eco resources and activities.

Year 7 Clean Up The 'Plantin'
Year 7 carried out a very successful litter pick in Moykerran Plantin on Friday 8th April. This was part of the Big Spring Clean Campaign. This was carried out along with Year 9 from St. Colm's and Rang 5,6,7 from Gaelscoil na Speiríní. 28 bags of litter were collected! A big thanks to John Murtagh from Mid Ulster Council for providing litter pickers and bags.

Ambassador Eco-Schools Status Award
St. Mary's Eco-council continues to maintain the high standards set by previous councils. They have big boots to fill with last years Eco-council scooping N.E.E.L.B Overall Best Kept School Award. In December the chairperson of the Eco-council welcomed Education Minister John O Dowd. He recognised the tremendous work carried out by the Eco-council. He acknowledged the outstanding commitment to green projects and environmental education.

For the second year running our school has gained recognition as being among the best kept schools in Northern Ireland!.
In 2013 St Mary's won the prestigious title of best kept Primary school in the North Eastern Board.
Once again we were successful in being named as runners up in this category.
Mrs Higgins, Nuala the Caretaker and two of our Primary Seven Eco Committee members travelled to Belfast on Tuesday June 10th to collect the award. The judges were very impressed with the school environment and in particular the eco projects which are happening.....
" The school grounds were spotless and it was great to hear of the new feature of having added a camera to the bird feeder which is powered by solar panels ,what a fantasitic idea!"
